What does the Barnard Cognitive Development Center study?
We study how young children think, learn, and develop spatial understanding.
How long does a visit take?
Our studies take about 10 minutes, but we schedule an hour so you and your child can feel at ease, get to know the researcher, and check out the toys in our playroom!
What will my child do during the study?
Depending on your child's age, he or she will watch a short video, look at picture books with us, or play with toys. We study how children learn by measuring their responses to these things.
When can I come in?
Most of our studies are run during normal business hours. We also offer some evening and weekend appointments.
Do your studies require multiple visits?
No, each study requires just one visit. As your child grows older, you may want to return to participate in a different study.
Are people paid to participate?
Every child gets to take home a special gift from us in gratitude for his or her participation. Your child will receive a certificate from the Center along with a Barnard t-shirt or toy. If you prefer going to a museum to a toy, we also give out Family Passes to the Children's Museum of Manhattan. We also provide your with a small travel reimbursement (a $5 Metrocard, or $5 for gas) for your trip to our campus.
Do I need to bring anything for a study?
Just yourself and your child!
I am looking for someone to do an evaluation of my child's development. Is that something done at your center?
We do not do individual assessments or evaluations; rather, our studies look at the trends across a group of children of a certain age.
Is it ok to bring my other children during my baby's visit?
Absolutely! At certain times of the week, we have extra students around who can babysit and play with your other children. Our playroom has toys and activities for any age.
